Image Compression Calculator

Compare approximate file sizes from dimensions and a typical-photo model. The tool neither encodes images nor assesses their quality.

Estimated size

The values are an estimate for a typical photo: the real size depends on the image content. Flat graphics and screenshots are often many times smaller in PNG, detailed photos larger. Check the size in your graphics application before sending.

The calculator estimates file sizes from fixed coefficients for a typical photo, without analysing your image. It does not check quality, profile or the requirements of a specific print shop. The rules for using the Tools are set out in the Terms of Service.

Image file formats - compression comparison

Choosing the right image format is crucial for image quality and file size. Lossless formats (TIFF, PNG) preserve full quality but create large files. Lossy formats (JPEG, WebP) significantly reduce size at the cost of slight quality loss.

For professional printing, we recommend TIFF or PNG, which don't introduce compression artifacts. For web publishing, WebP and AVIF offer the best quality-to-size ratio.
