Comparison of Printing Technologies: DTG vs DTF

When choosing a printing technology for producing our favorite t-shirts, hoodies, or bags, we often encounter various terms. Two of them that may seem puzzling are DTG (Direct-to-Garment) and DTF (Direct-to-Film). In this article, we will try to explain these two processes and highlight their key differences.

What is DTG (Direct-to-Garment)?

DTG stands for Direct-to-Garment, which means printing directly on clothing. This technology allows ink to be applied directly onto fabric using a special printer. DTG enables printing a full range of colors, making it an ideal choice for complex patterns and photographs. Unlike more traditional techniques such as screen printing, DTG is faster and less labor-intensive because it does not require creating individual templates for each color. The material we can print on is mainly 100% cotton.

What is DTF (Direct-to-Film)?

DTF, or Direct-to-Film, is a technology that involves printing an image on a special film, which is then transferred onto fabric using a heat press. DTF is more versatile than DTG because it can be used on various types of materials, not just cotton.

DTG vs DTF: What are the main differences?

Although DTG and DTF have much in common, there are several key differences:

  • Types of materials - DTG printing works best on cotton-based fabrics, while DTF can be used on various types of materials, including synthetic fabrics.
  • Surface structure - DTF printing is usually smoother with a more uniform surface structure, while DTG printing is more textured and connected to the structure of the material it was printed on.
  • Costs - both printing techniques offer similar printing costs, although the cheapest option is DTG printing on white and light fabrics.
  • Pattern complexity - Both processes can reproduce complex, multicolor patterns. DTG may offer slightly better quality for photographs and color gradients, but DTF is equally effective for most other patterns.

Which technology is right for me?

The choice between DTG and DTF technologies depends on many factors, such as the type of material, pattern complexity, and order size. Therefore, it is always worth carefully considering our needs before making a final decision.

We hope this article helped you understand the differences between DTG and DTF technologies. Remember that both DTG and DTF are modern printing technologies that enable high-quality prints on clothing. The choice between them depends only on your individual needs.
