Guide to Caring for DTG and DTF Printed Clothing

A DTG or DTF print can survive dozens of washes or just a few. The difference comes down not to the technology, but to what happens to the garment after it leaves the print shop.

Below is a practical guide: how each technique works, what actually damages a print, and which washing, drying and ironing settings extend its life. The rules differ slightly between DTG and DTF, because in one case the colour sits inside the fibre and in the other it rests on top of it in a layer of adhesive.

How DTG works

DTG (Direct-to-Garment) is direct printing onto clothing: the print head applies water-based pigment inks straight onto the fabric, much as an inkjet printer applies them to paper. The ink penetrates between the fibres and, once cured, becomes part of the material, so the print barely changes the hand of the fabric: the shirt stays soft and breathable.

The method delivers vivid colours and fine detail, including multi-colour artwork, without the setup costs typical of screen printing. It works best on cotton and blends with a high cotton content, because pigment needs a natural fibre to anchor itself in.

On dark fabrics, printing is preceded by a pre-treatment layer and a white underbase, without which the colours would disappear into the background. That layer tends to be the most sensitive to mistakes in care.

How DTF works

DTF (Direct-to-Film) reverses the order: the artwork is printed onto a special film, coated with adhesive powder, and only then transferred onto the garment under a heat press, typically at around 150–165°C for a dozen or so seconds.

The print therefore sits on the fabric as a thin, flexible layer. This makes DTF far less fussy about material composition: it handles polyester, blends, technical fabrics and places a print head cannot easily reach, such as sleeves, pockets, bags and caps.

The price of that versatility is the adhesive layer, which dislikes two things: high temperature and sharp creasing. Both come back in the recommendations below.

In practice the rules overlap by some ninety per cent. The difference is that DTG mostly loses colour intensity, while DTF loses adhesion.

The first day and the first wash

A fresh print needs time to reach full strength. Curing is of course completed at the print shop, but the adhesive and pre-treatment layers keep stabilising for several more hours, so it is worth waiting a day before the first wash.

Wash the garment separately the first time, or with items of a similar colour. Residues of the pre-treatment solution come off then and may tint the water slightly. This is normal and happens only once.

Washing
  • Inside out. Turning the shirt inside out is the simplest and most effective step: the print stops rubbing against the drum and other clothes.
  • 30°C maximum, on a delicate or synthetics programme.
  • Low spin, somewhere around 600–800 rpm. Higher speeds crease the print under the weight of wet fabric.
  • A mild detergent, preferably liquid. Powders contain abrasive particles that work on a print like fine sandpaper.
  • No fabric softener. It settles on the fibres and on the print, robbing it of flexibility.
  • No bleach or chlorine stain removers, including those hidden in whitening powders.
  • Do not soak for long. Fifteen minutes will do no harm; several hours weaken the binder.

Remove stains from printed garments locally, with lukewarm water and a gentle product, without rubbing the design itself.

Drying
  • No tumble dryer. It combines the two worst factors at once: high temperature and constant friction.
  • Air dry, on a hanger or flat, still inside out.
  • Away from sunlight. UV radiation breaks pigments down. It is the same mechanism that fades posters in shop windows.
  • Not on a radiator. Direct contact with a hot surface can soften the adhesive in a DTF print.
Ironing
  • Always from the reverse side. If you must iron from the front, place a cotton cloth or silicone paper over the print.
  • Low temperature, that is the setting for synthetics, not for linen.
  • No steam. Moisture combined with heat softens the print layer.
  • Keep the iron moving rather than resting it over the design.

The most common damage we see in complaints is a shiny patch: an iron pressed straight onto the print flattens it and leaves a glossy mark. That cannot be undone.

Storage
  • Do not fold across the print. A crease held on the design for months can crack it, especially with DTF.
  • A hanger rather than a pile, if the garment is to be stored for longer.
  • In a pile, separate shirts with paper or fold them print side out, so the designs do not touch each other.
  • Dry and out of the sun. Moisture weakens the binder, and light works on colours even in a wardrobe by a window.

  • ironing directly on the print,
  • tumble drying and drying in full sun,
  • fabric softeners and bleach,
  • scrubbing the design with a brush,
  • washing together with zips and studs, which act like a grater.
How long a print lasts

Following the advice in this article, a well-made DTG or DTF print goes through dozens of wash cycles without a visible drop in quality. Washed hot, with fabric softener and tumble dried, the same shirts lose their looks after a dozen or so washes, and the first cracks in the design appear even earlier.

The arithmetic is simple: a few seconds spent turning a shirt inside out translates into years of wear.

Why the colour on screen differs from the one on the shirt

A monitor emits light, fabric reflects it, so identical colour values produce a different impression on each. The widest gaps appear in saturated blues, intense greens and fluorescent oranges, which printing inks simply cannot reach.

All care for printed garments comes down to four habits: wash inside out at 30°C, air dry, iron from the reverse without steam, and never fold across the design. Everything else merely refines those rules.

DTG mostly suffers from sunlight and abrasion, DTF from heat and creasing, but both techniques forgive a great deal if you treat them like good wool rather than a work T-shirt.
